Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin strips of tooth-colored, strain resistant porcelain that Dr. Marshall bonds to the front surfaces of your teeth.

They look like natural, healthy enamel, but they’re much more stain-resistant. Veneers can cover up imperfections, including:

  • Discoloration
  • Cracks
  • Chips
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Gaps between teeth

If you’d like a long-lasting solution, or if teeth whitening isn’t effective for correcting your cosmetic dental problems, veneers can help.

You may get veneers on just one tooth or multiple teeth. Some people choose to get veneers on all the teeth that are visible when they talk or smile.

Veneers are a cosmetic procedure, and their main purpose is to cover up imperfections. Although they can strengthen your teeth they’ve lost some enamel, their main purpose is to give you a brighter, more even smile.

If you have significant tooth damage or decay, Dr. Marshall may recommend more involved cosmetic and restorative work, including crowns and implants.

What happens during a veneer procedure?

Teeth by Keith: Keith Marshall, DDS is proud to offer same-day veneers. Though traditional veneer procedures required two office visits, Dr. Marshall has the equipment to manufacture veneers in the office, so he can transform your smile in just one appointment.

The first step is to take digital impressions of your teeth. Dr. Marshall uses digital images of your teeth to design your veneers so they fit your teeth perfectly, including a natural-looking shade and the right shape.

While the machine manufactures your veneers, Dr. Marshall prepares your teeth. This may require removing a small amount of enamel, about the same thickness as the veneer. As needed, he provides local anesthetic during this step to numb the area.

Once your veneer is ready, Dr. Marshall places your veneers on the surface of your teeth using dental cement.

You may need a couple of weeks to get used to talking and eating with veneers. Dr. Marshall may recommend a follow-up appointment at Teeth by Keith: Keith Marshall, DDS a few weeks later, at which time he can make any necessary adjustments.

How do I take care of my veneers?

You should take care of your veneers like natural teeth. For the longest-lasting results, brush at least twice a day, floss at least once a day, and get regular cleanings at Teeth by Keith: Keith Marshall, DDS.

Though porcelain is stain-resistant and highly durable, it’s still possible to stain both the dental cement and your teeth below the veneers. You should minimize your intake of drinks like coffee and tea and acidic foods like berries, and avoid using tobacco.

Certain habits can reduce the lifespan of your veneers. If you grind or clench your teeth, you may benefit from a nightguard. It’s also important to avoid biting your nails or using your teeth to open packages. With proper care, veneers can last over a decade.
